Engaging With Your Connections on LinkedIn

Regularly engage with your network.  

  • Review and interact with wall posts.
    • Daily review your home page updates section. You then have the option to engage with your connections by liking, commenting and/or sharing their posts.
  • Share articles, photos, videos and ideas on your home page. 
    • This is a great way to regularly interact with your network. Posting content is a way to say hello to your network and develop and maintain good ongoing relationships.
    • The goal is to cultivate your network with interesting and informative topics and/or announcements.
    • Don’t be SPAM. If you are constantly writing posts that focus on selling your products or services or blatantly “begging” for a job you will be considered spam. In addition, if you connect with someone and immediately sell your products or services, or ask for a job without establishing value or before having a relationship, you will also be considered spam. As you communicate with your connections, think about how your interactions will be perceived if you were the recipient.

    Share your expertise.

    • Be an expert in your industry and share your expertise with others by posting content where appropriate.
    • Provide links to other valuable sources of applicable information especially where you have contributed in the past. Examples include in blogs, quotes in articles, or other places where you have supplied content.
    • Always respond to comments or questions within 24 hours.
    • The frequency of updating your status depends on your goals; however, in order to establish a relationship between you and prospects, you should establish a regular cadence that is in alignment with your overall goals.
  • Touch base with prospects and customers.
    • Take a personal approach and reach out to those who you are connected with and stay in touch. As you grow your network, it will become more and more difficult to connect with everyone on a daily or weekly basis. Instead, make a commitment that you will reach out to a certain number of people every week and stick to it. Be realistic. Maybe it will only be 1-2 people a week, but if you do this regularly, then you are touching base with a couple hundred over the course of a year.
    • Here are some ways you can interact with your connections:
      • Send an invitation to join a group you think they would be interested in.
      • Extend an invite to attend a local event or maybe a webinar.
      • Introduce connections to others they could benefit from knowing and share the reasons you think that it would be advantageous.
      • Comment on their activity. Congratulate them if they have a new job, read an article they posted and “like” it etc.
      • Send a personal email to say hi and find out what he/she has been up to. Showing interest is a very powerful way to grab someone’s attention.
      • Provide a testimonial.
      • Endorse a skill.
  • Participate in key groups to meet new people amplify your brand. 
    • LinkedIn occasionally changes the location of groups within the platform, so just Google, “How to find groups on LinkedIn to get the most recent instructions.
    • Per LinkedIn, people who post in LinkedIn Groups get an average of four times more profile views.
    • Groups are a great way for like minded people to hang out and share ideas, find answers, establish yourself as a thought-leader, make business contacts and have online discussions.
    • Being an active participant can help connect you with potential customers and employers.
    • By presenting yourself as a leader of the industry, potential customers, employers or recruiters will start to pay attention to your profile and your postings, events and activities.
    • Spend some time reading the posts in the groups that you join. Pick 3-5 at a time and read the discussion board and do one or all of the following activities:
      • “Like” those discussions that are of interest to you. This shows that you are engaged with the topic and you will have the option to interact with anyone else that participates in this discussion.
      • Comment on a discussion which gives you the opportunity to share your expertise, gain some credibility in the community and increase your visibility.
      • Share the discussion with others on your wall, other groups that you belong to or send directly to one or more of your connections. This is a great way to interact and demonstrate that you are willing to share and contribute content.
